Fitter Younger aims to increase the physical activity levels of today's Children and Adolescents by providing opportunites for them to participate in non sport specific group activities. In todays world of technological advances, an increased amount of time is being spent in a sedentary lifestyle. Any time a person is sitting or lying down, they are engaging in sedentary behaviour. Common sedentary behaviours include TV viewing, video game playing, computer use (collective termed "screen time"), driving vehicles, and reading. These are having a detremential effect on our lives and especially the lives of Children and Adolescents. Potential benefits linked to physical activity in children and young people include the acquisition of social skills through active play (leadership, teamwork and co-operation), better concentration in school and displacement of anti-social and criminal behaviour.
The School Marathon Relay fundraising event came about as a progression from these non specific fitness classes. There is nothing that is easier to do than to go running. Some will run fast and others will run slow, but it's an activity that is free and available to everyone. The School Marathon Relay brings the full school community together to complete the distance of a marathon. All pupils are able to take part, and to their surprise, even the teachers are encouraged to take part in the event. It really does create a fantastic buzz around the school.
